San Gimignano

M.C. Escher San Gimignano woodcut 28,9 x 49,3 cm January-February 1923

In 1922, Escher visited the Italian town of San Gimignano, situated between Florence and Siena. The drawings and sketches he created there were then turned into prints at home. In this woodcut, Escher emphasises the high and steep towers of the medieval town, once built as a symbol of wealth and power. The towers are lit up brightly against the dark sky, making them even more striking.
